Church website design trends are ever-changing, just like any trend. Other than it is difficult to keep up with, it’s a good thing. I mean, who wants the same designs year after year?

The start of a new year is the perfect time to take a look at your church website and determine if it needs a little updating. Is your content missing information? Is the layout illogical? Can people find what they’re looking for?

As you and your team evaluate the changes you want to make to your site in 2022, take a look at 5 of the church website design trends you may want to implement. While you’re at it, check out what not to do with your website this year.

1. Geometric Designs

The geometric craze is still moving forward into 2022. Rigid patterns and shapes highlight a contrast to simple backgrounds. A lot of these geometric designs are shifting into parametric patterns—intricate geometric structures where each line morphs depending on the position. This trend is used in a lot of architecture and is making its way into graphic and web design.

If your church website is dull, consider waking it up with shapes and patterns. Layer triangles and diamonds on top of photos. Have 3D swirling lines in the background of part of a webpage. Use geometric designs to draw attention to an important event or information.

2. Monochrome

Along with the minimalist trend in the webspace, monochrome may be a popular church website design trend in the coming year. It can be super simple, like varying shades of white or grey. Or use shades of comfortable colors like natural greens or browns. But since it’s monochrome, stick to one color.

If you’re nervous that it might be too boring, add in various shapes and textures. Tie in those geometric patterns we just talked about. Monochrome is trending because, after two years in a pandemic, people want something simple and uncomplicated.

3. Fonts

Some popular fonts for 2022 will be minimalist fonts, bold fonts, and animated typography. Classic serif fonts are making a comeback too, like Times New Roman and Georgia. Don’t forget that things like line-height, letter spacing, and whitespace all play a significant role in readability too.

Keep in mind, whichever fonts you choose, be sure that they complement each other. They should follow your church’s branding and style too. For example, you probably don’t want to use glitch fonts if you have a congregation that would have difficulty reading and appreciating them.

4. Layers

Graphic designers are used to working with layers. Websites are using some of these same methods in 2022. You’ll see layered images—multiple images stacked but off-center so you can still see the bottom layers. Text is being layered on top of images. We’ve seen this for quite some time, but designers are playing with how the text is positioned.

If done correctly, having layers on your church website will allow you to provide more content without it feeling too busy. It can also create more depth on the page. People are looking at screens all day, so offering something other than a flat surface can enhance their experience.

5. Videos

Online videos are everywhere now. This trend has been increasing over the years. A 2021 survey shows people watched an average of 2.5 hours of online videos per day. This is up from an average of 1.5 hours in 2018. And people are twice as likely to share video content with their friends than any other type of content, such as social media posts, blogs, and articles.

As a church, you can use videos for multiple reasons. Share the latest sermon on your website. Provide a video devotional in your next mass email (that links back to your site, of course). You could even include a montage video on your homepage to give people a glimpse inside your building. The point is videos aren’t going anywhere. People are consuming online videos more each year. Your visitors might appreciate seeing them on your site, too.
